Dezi Magby, aka DJ Psycho aka Piggy McTiggers, might be the first person to tell you he’s a rockstar, but anyone who’s seen him perform will surely be quick to confirm it. Humble, yet rightfully self-assured, the Detroit-based DJ is nothing short of a record whisperer. The vinyl-only turntable titan can mix, match, and scratch wax like it’s nobody’s business but his.
A born musician and bona fide musical almanac, Magby discovered a love of performing at a young age. Inspired by the greats, from George Clinton to George Carlin to Casey Kasem, the multi-instrumentalist has been DJing and producing for over four decades. In that time, Magby has fine-tuned his talents, honing a masterful command of his delightfully diverse palette and staggering record collection.
What started in 2017 as an umbrella to release his latest mix, Magby’s Bessie’s Boy imprint quickly evolved into a platform that has provided him creative freedom. He also lends his talents to Juan Atkins’ Deep Space Radio with the weekly Verbs From the Dungeon, a 3-hour excursion that sees him flex his far-reaching musical muscles. This autonomy as both a label owner and radio host enables Magby to explore and expand the complexities of his genre-bending mind, all while showcasing his wicked sense of humor and impressive ear.
With the hard-earned reputation for being able to tear the roof off of any venue, in any city, and in any genre, Magby is an utter menace behind a set of turntables. He’s performed at Movement Electronic Music Festival on six occasions, and has been nominated for eight Detroit Music Awards, boasting four wins. Heavily influenced by icons like Jeff “The Wizard” Mills, Grandmaster Flash, Yellow Magic Orchestra, and Prince, his deep love and respect for vinyl–and even deeper crates–make him a formidable force every time he steps on stage.
